The play was widely interpreted as an attack on Communism!

But what else does the plot show?

The party line is, at one and the same time, sufficiently sacred to justify murder, and sufficiently flexible to be changed at a moment’s notice.

It seems to have greatly surprised Sartre that Les Mains Sales could be interpreted as a major contribution to the ideological crusade against the Soviet Union which was so important a feature of the Cold War.

Keeping Faith with Socialism

Indeed, in 1952, Sartre went so far as to forbid any further performances of the play. It was, he said, being taken over for purposes he had not intended and of which he did not approve. This did not prevent Sartre’s criticism of the form which Communism had taken under the dictatorship of Stalin.
